Brain Development and Learning

As a Teacher, Professor, Counselor and School Psychologist, I have worked with those who have trouble  learning for over 25 years. My area of expertise is brain and behavior. We look at how the  brain matures developmentally and what styles are strengths are what age level. Anyone can learn  effectively and efficiently at any age with the right techniques and strategies.

Resolving Conflicts Building Relationships

Conflict is a normal, natural part of living in a complex society. Learning to respect differences and learning to appreciate oneself is a key essential skill. This seven step program teaches one to look at the problem or issue from all perspectives and to create win-win situations or to be able to part agreeing to disagree. Learning to deal with conflict is an essential skill to live in society.

Cross-Cultural Communication

The key to effective cross-cultural communication is knowledge. People in different cultures communicate differently. What may be appropriate in one culture is totally unacceptable in another culture. One must understand the potential problems of cross-cultural communication, and make a conscious effort to overcome these problems. One’s efforts will not always be successful so be prepared to adjust your behavior appropriately.

There was a teacher in a California high school who had a good relationship with the students in his class especially a student from Latin America. He jokingly called the student a turkey. He explained over and over again that it was a term of endearment but the student was deeply offended and reported the incident to his parents. The parents requested a conference and wanted the teacher disciplined for insulting their child. Here was clearly and instance where an explanation, apology and a change in behavior was necessary.

Intermediaries who are familiar with both cultures can be helpful in cross-cultural communication situations. They can translate both the substance and the manner of what is said. They may tone down strong statements that would be considered appropriate in one culture but not in another, before they are given to people from a culture that does not talk together in such a strong way. They can also adjust the timing of what is said and done. Some cultures move quickly to the point; others talk about other things long enough to establish rapport or a relationship with the other person. If discussion on the primary topic begins too soon, the group that needs a "warm up" first will feel uncomfortable. A mediator or intermediary who understands this can explain the problem, and make appropriate procedural adjustments. Some intermediaries have biases of their own and can acerbate the problem. So you need to be careful, be open and apologize if you offend someone. This keynote addresses this issue with humor and compassion.

Second Language Acquisition

Dr. McHenry conducted research on how the brain acquires a second language developmentally. She acquired 5 languages in 2 ½ half years. It is possible for any person to learn a language effectively and efficiently at any age taking into consideration the age of the person, motivation and personality type. This keynote presentation is both informative and entertaining.
